In late 2017, a proposal by Skidmore, Owings & Merril ( SOM ), put together in collaboration with the Maryland-based Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate, was overwhelmingly approved by the local city council, but less than a month later, things seemed to have gone awry. It’s been a long road for those involved in Kansas City ’s mega-plan to upgrade its outdated international airport, but the process is moving along. (Courtesy SOM and Edgemoor Architecture & Real Estate) Stakeholders sought to enhance circulation and the visitor's experience by integrating wide-open interior spaces.Outside the baggage claim, a landscaped plaza will welcome fliers to the city.An interactive display detailing both the histories of the airport and the city will be built on-site.Clerestory windows and floor-to-ceiling windows will light up the departure areas.
The baggage claim area will include the same amenities for passengers including ample light and more retail.Now under construction, the project will consolidate the airport's three terminals into one.The Kansas City International Airport will complete its major upgrade by 2023.
